How to Meditate & why – 5 Benefits

***Everything I’m about to share is based on my own personal experience, and how I’ve come to understand meditation.

When I talk to people about meditation, they usually ask me if they’re doing it right. My answer is always the same: THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY. There is only YOUR WAY.

You see, every single person is living a unique experience that is totally their own. Wherever you are on your journey, this article serves as a basic understanding of what meditation is, and how it benefits you in your life.

There are many ways you can approach meditation, just know that there is no single right way to go about it. Only thing you need to do is decide to commit to a practice and start exploring which way works best for you.

First, let’s talk about what meditation is.

Meditation is the practice of becoming fully present within your body, focusing on your senses and using your breath to guide the process for a steady amount of time.

This is the very basic way of meditating, which is the one I’ve used for a few years now. Here’s how I do it:

HOW TO MEDITATE

  • Sit comfortably (doesn’t matter where: chair, sofa, bed, cross-legged on the floor…)
  • Close your eyes, begin to take deep breaths in, and slow breaths out
  • Once you’ve got a steady rhythm in your breathing, guide your mind to start noticing your senses (sounds, smells, the way the clothes feels on your skin…)
  • Next, beginning at the top of your head, start to feel out every single muscle, bone, and joint, relaxing everything along the way that feels tense/ tight.
  • Next, try to get a sense of your internal organs. Think about the placement of your lungs, your stomach, your intestines. Put your awareness on your heart and keep breathing deeply.
  • As you become fully relaxed, SMILE and sit in the stillness you’ve created, aware of your senses, and fully present in the moment for as long as you can. I go for about 10-15 minutes
  • When you’re ready, open your eyes, and enjoy the high!

pro tip:
If you find your mind drifting into a stream of thoughts, be easy about it and bring it back to your breathing. This always happens to me, but with practice I’ve been able to better manage the direction my mind goes in.

As I mentioned, this is a basic approach to meditation.

There are many ways you can enhance your sensory experience during meditation.
Some people use guided meditations, sound bowls, zen music, essential oils, candles, or incense during their practice. All those are instruments you can use to help guide your mind to focus on your senses.

Why meditate?

The practice of stillness enhances your life experience. You’ll be more aware of your body, mind, and energy.

TOP 5 BENEFITS OF MEDITATING

  1. Meditation builds a healthy relationship with your body
Rather than waiting for your body to show you signs of malnutrition, getting in touch with your body is about communicating with your cells and listening/ paying attention to the signals of what your body needs (water, nutrients, exercise)
  2. Meditation helps open up a sensory dialogue
Your senses are there for a reason! Becoming aware of your senses enhances everything you do, making the experience of life WAY more enjoyable! Even something as simple as washing dishes can be an enhanced experience!
  3. Meditation connects you to your emotional guidance system
Your emotions are a clear indication if something is off in your body. If you are feeling bad most of the time, chances are your body is lacking in nutrients or exercise. Also, if you are feeling negative emotion on a regular basis, it just means you’ve got a habit of feeling that way. You can totally amp up your vibe with a simple meditation practice.
  4. Meditation balances your thoughts
The mind is very powerful and if you have no control over it, it will control you and your life! Thinking thoughts is something you CAN’T stop doing. Even as you  meditate, your thinking about something. The key is to get the mind to focus on your senses.
  5. Meditation helps control your reaction in every situation
There are things in life far beyond your control. Once upon a time, we faced lions. In today’s world, the lions we face are given different names. Just like the lions however, we are capable of producing the same emotions in our body when faced with challenges. Today, we call those lions stress, fear, guilt, shame…but not to worry! The more you stick with your practice, the more your power will rule over those nasty lions!

I hope this basic guide has inspired you to begin your meditation practice, (if you haven’t already), so you can find that connection to your senses and better express your love in every area of your life.

Remember, the journey is different for everyone, and with practice you’ll improve over time, making meditation easier and enjoyable!

Overwhelmed? 5 Steps to clarity

Hello my lovelies,

I’ve been under a mental hibernation.

For a month I played tug-a-war with SO MANY  brilliant Pinterest ideas and saved screen shots from google searches that I took myself to a real place called “overwhelm.”

Talk about information overload!

I found myself inside my studio…sketches, magazine clipping and notes all around…I felt dizzy.

I couldn’t get myself to focus on ONE specific thing.

Everything seemed so important!

Time was ticking and there was money on the line…

As uncomfortable as this situation may seem, anytime I’m on the verge of insanity I KNOW I’m about to have some sort of break through.

Having had this experience before, I knew that the only way to refocus my energy is to stop, get up, and get out.

So for about 3 days I closed up my studio and got my body moving & into nature.

Sitting in front of the ocean I’d close my eyes, taking deep breaths in, and on the exhale I’d ask out loud:

What do I REALLY want?

What outcome am I reaching for here?

As soon as I shifted the direction of my focus, (which was on to the outcome) I started receiving answers.

Not only did I know exactly what project to tackle first, but a sense of relief washed all over my mind & body. I placed my hands on my heart, enjoying the appreciation I was feeling.

I share this story with you to help you see that clarity and focus comes to you when you know exactly what outcome you want.

Not sure what outcome you want?
Tony Robbins says it best:

“Ask better quality questions, to get quality answers.”

When your mind is asking lousy questions, as he puts it, it’ll reach for lousy answers!

So what outcome was I looking for?

CLARITY.

Clarity in my work process, momentum, ease, and flow. Once I connected to those emotions, I knew deep down in my heart what projects to take on first.

PRACTICE THIS next time you visit the land of overwhelm:

1) Acknowledge how you feel.

2) Get yourself out of the space that’s causing you to feel that way, and into a peaceful environment (like in nature or a zen space in your home).

3) Do deep breathing exercises to calm your mind & body.

4) When ready, ask out loud quality questions about the outcome you want.

5) Be open to allow your heart to guide and serve you, & you’ll soon receive the answers you’re looking for.

Be easy about this, the key here is to learn how to shift your energy from overwhelm to clarity.

May take a few days, but the more you practice, the better you’ll get.

Also, don’t push the process.

The more you push to try and resolve something, the less you’ll be able to tackle it from your heart.

I sure hope this was helpful!

If you found it useful and know someone who could use this advice, express your love & share it!

 😊

Thanks so much for reading,

Sending you clarity & love from my heart to yours!

How to bust your creative blocks

Have you ever experienced a creative block?
Like your ideas don’t seem good enough, and you can’t come up with something beautiful, or fun, or inspiring?

I sure have…

Art school was NOT easy for me.

Not that I hated it, it’s just that every semester, every class, every project always began with a bunch of self-doubt.

I didn’t feel like my work was good. Like, at all.
I compared my skills and style to artists I admired who are like, beyond amazing.
I had a sense of “unworthiness” looming around me.
Worst of all, these emotions were reflecting in my work.

I was stuck, and couldn’t find my way out.

Clearly I had a problem, and although I’ve been a student of metaphysics and the law of attraction my whole life, this was just one subject I COULDN’T FIGURE OUT.

So my questions to the Universe were:
What am I supposed to do with my life?
Is this “the best” I can do?
How will I ever figure out my artistic style?
When will I overcome this?

TALK ABOUT A CREATIVE BLOCK! It lasted nearly 5 years of my life!

Aside from the drama, I want to point something out from this story:
all my worries and troubles were tied to questions. I HAD SO MANY QUESTIONS.

These questions were at the root of my creative block. What does that mean, really?
O.K here is where I talk about energy and momentum.

Law of Attraction is the same thing as momentum. When you begin to think about something, the very first manifestation you get is a feeling, an emotion.
Law of attraction then begins to attract similar thoughts that match this emotion you just manifested.

If you continue to think about these thoughts, before you know it, you’ve got some momentum building around this topic, and now you’re riding the wave of it (emotionally, that is).
Once you’re on that wave, unless you know how to slow it down, you’re going to stay there for some time.
The next thing that happens is that the Law of attraction will just keep bringing experiences that match those same emotions.
Whoa, I know! Maybe new terminology for some…stay with me!

So, how does this relate to creative blocks? Well, think about it. Just “thinking” you’re going through a creative block will attract more creative blockage…

Your focus on a problem (a creative block, in this case), feels much different and feels  super far away from putting your attention on the solution (which in our case, the best solution here is to be a creative genius).

A creative block simply means you have your attention on it as a real “problem,” and this attention is having you feel negative emotions around it. The more keep your attention on this as being a problem in your life, the longer it’s going to stick around. Plus, while your attention is on the problem, you block any and all ideas from flowing in.

So this is how I came out of my 5 year funk, and a tool you can use for yourself:

  1. Become aware of your questions and emotions associated to them. Take out a piece of paper, your journal, or sketchbook. Draw a line going down the center that splits the paper in half. On the left side write the word “Questions”, and on the other side write “Solutions.” Now choose a topic that’s bothering you (like, how can I unblock my creativity?), and make a list of all the questions you’ve got going on about whatever is bothering you.
Can you describe what these questions feel like in your body?
Then, on the left side write down any possible solutions you might come up with at the moment, even if they terrify you. The answers I wrote down for myself terrified me, but only because all my attention was still focused on the problem. Remember, questions and answers both feel different in our body, and if you’re riding the “fear-based question” wave, it’s impossible to feel good at the same time.
Write down as many solutions as possible. Keep writing until you feel some relief in your body.
Something magical happens when you take your problems floating around in your head and put ’em onto something tangible that you can read out loud. You’d be surprised at the patterns that start coming up for you. This practice helps you to see your problems from a logical point of view, and away from an emotional point of view (your emotions are what law of attraction responds to).
  2. Make a list of all the things you LOVE to do and feel good to you. May seem odd to do this next, but instead of hammering away on trying to “fix” this block, we are going to slowly shift waves here for a bit, start searching for the build up of a new, deep wave, one that feels familiar and good to you. To do this you’ve gotta get off the subject of whats blocking you and on to something that feels lighter and much better. I want you to on the back of this paper, write down all of the things you absolutely LOVE in this moment. Things that inspire you, like places to visit, colors you love, movies to watch, maybe its dancing, singing, maybe you can doodle a few things…the idea here is that once you’ve started writing down solutions in the previous exercise, your brain began thinking in a different direction, and what you want to do is slowly enhance that shift by changing the subject in your mind to the things you enjoy doing the most. Added bonus here is to FEEL those good emotions as you’re writing/ doodling all these things you absolutely LOVE.
  3. Get your body to move! After doing this exercise, I am sure you will have begun a new momentum, one that leans towards solutions, towards creativity and inspiration. If you found that spark, even if it’s the smallest sensation of a shift within you, I want you to get up and MOVE YOUR BODY. You want to build on this momentum by enhancing those good feelings. Have a dance break, go to the gym, go for a run, do some yoga, go for a walk, put on some inspiring music and do some free-form movements, go for a swim, bike riding…
Build that spark of momentum in your body. Let it move you, inspire you.TRUST me this works.

Disclaimer: Once you feel that shift, DO NOT go back to your list to try to solve your creative block/ problem by continuing to ponder about it. The way that energy flows is like that wave I mentioned. You’ve gotta let this small shift in emotion gain some momentum until you’re 100% riding the new wave. Just let that subject go all together, and give yourself the opportunity to move into a better feeling place, where all the answers to all your problems and creative blocks live.

Moral of the story is, focusing on the creative block won’t get you anywhere near allowing goodness to flow in. Attention to either one requires different points of focus and awareness. In order to express your true self and allow those creative juices to flow, become solution oriented! It’s a state of mind worth the practice, because not only will it serve you creatively, but also in your everyday life.

This practice, coupled with meditation (which I’ll talk about in another post) and a few other “rituals” I’ve developed over time, was my #1 tool in busting my creative block. Took me A LOT of practice, I’m not saying I did this once and BAM, all problems solved. I did, however, get SO GOOD at balancing my emotions that honestly, I still use this method to this day. My problems are far less than what they use to be, but hey, problems come up on the daily. It’s how you move through those waves that matter most.

I TRULY hope this post was of help to you!

I’d love to know, have you suffered from a creative block in your life? If so, what techniques did you use to get through it?

Also, if you feel that this information may help someone you know, please share it with them. It may be the solution to their problem 🙂

With Love,

Marisol Medina

P.S: Some words I mentioned here might be new to some of you, so I’ve defined them and linked the resources:
Law of Attraction: That which is like unto itself, is drawn. In other words, that which you think, in any moment, attracts unto itself other thoughts that are like it.
manifestation: a perceptible, outward, or visible expression

Welcome!

Hi friends! Welcome to my blog 🙌
My name is Marisol. I’m the artist and creator of Pop Heart Studio – an online and mobile art gift shop.

My purpose as an artist is to create paintings that feel like joy, excitement, and LOVE 💖

Just as I’m passionate about expressing joy  through my art, I also have a passion for personal development.
People who know me would say I’m very kind, creative, sweet, compassionate….and a SUPER DUPER great listener. They would also say my favorite topics are about the universe, energy, life….💖

I’ve been learning about self care and the law of attraction since I was a kid. My greatest teacher (and hero, my dad) taught me the basics of metaphysics. He showed me techniques on how to design a life of joy. He also taught me how to handle situations that are beyond my control.

Throughout the years it has become my passion to really understand the human life experience as a whole.  I’ve gathered enough practice and life experience to finally share my secrets on how to live a balanced, thriving life.

I live in the moment, aware of my eternal-ness, aware that I’m alive. I check on myself to see where I’m at, to see what my body needs and is asking of me. I make self care my #1 priority in life, because I am not of service to you if I cannot first be of service to myself.

If this is new stuff for you, I promise it’s a game changer.

I’ll insert a disclaimer here: I’m not a doctor…and everything you’ll read is based solely on my personal practices. I’ll always share my resources, and if I don’t then you’ll know its original work.

This space allows me to bridge the gap between my artwork and my interpretation of life. It is a brilliant way for me to connect with you and hopefully be of service to you.

I believe we are all creators, and I’m here to teach you how to live a ridiculously AMAZING life by expressing your love from HEAD to SOUL.

I’ll post MY take on topics based on all areas of life, and how I intentionally use the law of attraction EVERY SINGLE DAY…no matter what!

It’s not rocket science, and once you know the concepts, you can very easily develop your own personal habits that’ll transform the quality of your life.

May these teachings reach those who are ready to learn, and may this be a tool for you to create an extraordinary life! 😄

Stay tuned as we go on this journey together of creativity, life, and love!

Oh, and please make sure to comment and leave me your feedback below! 😊 I’d love to get to know you and the community we’ll be building together ❤❤❤

💋 Much love,
